My Issues With the Past Few Seasons of Grey's Anatomy

I have been watching Grey's Anatomy for the past four seasons when they have aired on television. I watched the prior eleven seasons on Netflix during the summer after sophomore year. I fell in love instantly with the show. The characters, the stories, the acting, the medicine. All of it. I could not contain my joy for the show. When a new season started, I would always ask some of my friends if they had seen last night's episode. I don't have the save opinion on the show that I used to.

Ever since Derek Shepherd died, the show has dipped in quality, and it's not because Derek died. Yes, it was a huge blow to the show, but I believed it could keep its momentum going. The show has lost momentum due to the underdevelopment of characters, the repetitive and weak storylines, and the weak acting.

We went from having Izzie to having Amelia, always complaining about her dating life. We went from Cristina to Maggie, who does nothing but try to add humor to the show. We went from George to having cartoon characters as interns. Dr. Bailey went from this no nonsense, strong woman to being so easily coerced into doing things. Jackson and Owen have become "filler" characters at this point and don't get me started on the Maggie and Jackson pairing. Who thinks of that? Meredith Grey went from this complex, "dark and twisty" character to a one-dimensional one. Also, I hate the fact that they're trying to get Meredith to date again. Shonda Rhimes pushes strong women in her shows, so why can't Meredith just be a single, strong woman? She should not need a love interest to make her complete. Derek made her complete. I just miss the chemistry that the old characters used to have with each other. The newer characters just do not appeal to me, and they tend to grate on my nerves.

The storylines from the past four seasons have been moderate to very weak. When I watched the older seasons, I always wanted to know what happened next because the storylines drove the characters to new obstacles that they could overcome. Now it seems there cannot be a coherent storyline for more than one episode. I mean literally, go and watch an episode and the storyline will be resolved within that same episode. We had amazing storylines from the on and off again relationship between Meredith and Derek, Dr. Webber's alcohol storyline, Izzie's cancer that was the heart of season five. We used to have amazing episodes like Meredith's hand in the bomb cavity, which still gives me the chills. We had the hospital shooting, which is one of the most terrifying episodes of any TV show I have ever seen. Now we have Amelia and Owen breaking up and getting back together six times every episode, and we have lovable characters in April and Arizona being written off the show as if they were expendable in the first place.

Finally, the acting has been atrocious mainly with the humor the show has had recently. I watch this show to feel emotion, not to laugh or roll my eyes. I am so tired of seeing clumsy interns that don't act stupid, but annoying. I remember always laughing at Cristina because her one liners were not always constant, and they were sharp and quick. I don't want to hear Meredith tell an intern "Please don't call me ma'am" where the intern responds with "Yes ma'am. I mean sorry ma'am." It's not funny. Sorry. I don't like forced humor.

I really do believe that Grey's Anatomy should start wrapping up with the show. I'm pretty sure Ellen Pompeo has hinted that season sixteen will be the last and to be honest, I hope it is. I know that Shonda Rhimes wants to surpass ER as the longest running primetime medical drama, so I will give it to her, but if she continues to milk the show any longer, then it is just going to become unwatchable.
I love Grey's Anatomy. It will always have a place in my heart as one of my favorite television shows, but I really do hope it ends soon and on a high note at that.

Let me know what you think. Do you believe the show is running out of gas or do you still enjoy it?
